Your drill sergeant is a person you probably will not like very much at first. His goal is not to become popular; rather, his goal is to forge you into a soldier. To this end he works, and though you may not like him, you will respect him greatly. His job is one of the most important, difficult, and unappreciated jobs possible. Everything you are required to do and learn, he has done with twice the difficulty. Everywhere you are required to go he also has been, many times before. When you are hot or tired or aching from Physical Training, he may very well feel the same. He is in charge not only of your training but ultimately of the future U.S. Army, and it is a job he takes very seriously.
So then, drill sergeants may seem overly vicious and perhaps cruel at first. In such times, it helps to remember their ultimate goal is to build you into the best soldier you can possibly be.
